A woman has called on others to 'stay calm' during the Covid-19 crisis after celebrating her 101st birthday.

Kay Smith celebrated her special day with staff and her fellow residents at the Home Prince Edward Duke of Kent Court care home in Stisted.

Nurses at the home were able to organise a small party despite the ongoing pandemic and ensured Kay was spoilt on her big day.

Activities co-ordinator Dani Lane said: "“Kay had a wonderful day. She received lots of lovely flowers, videos and cards from her family and friends.

"She told me she was truly happy that we went to so much effort to make her 101st birthday so special."

Kay, who was a voluntary nurse during the Second World War, enjoyed a week of celebrations having also taken part in the VE Day party.

She says the key to a long and healthy life is "being around family and friends" and says she is "always up to mischief" which helps keep her going.

When asked what advice she would give to be people worried about the coronavirus crisis, she replied: "The only way to get through this pandemic is to keep calm and don’t worry."
