Hundreds of homes could now be built on the “busiest road in Rochford,” a report has revealed.

Ashingdon Road could soon have 665 new homes built directly off it, if plans submitted by Bloor Homes are given the green light.

But a report commissioned by the Highways department at Essex County Council has revealed worrying statistics.

The Highways Baseline Technical Note, published in 2017, says the road is “oversubscribed in traffic”, with the roundabout connecting Southend Road, Ashingdon Road, and Hall Road “125 per cent oversubscribed”.

Campaigners, part of the Rochford Supporters’ group, have raised serious concerns about the amount of traffic in Ashingdon Road, since early plans were released.

The report also reads: “Infrastructure improvements are needed at Ashingdon Road” and highlights “there is little free flow traffic along the road.”

Christine Austin, one of the leaders of the Rochford Supporters, slammed council bosses for failing to take heed.

She said: “This road has been the same since the 1960s.

“The amount of traffic since then has increased by 1,047 per cent.

“The road simply won’t be able to cope.

“It’s already broken.

“Everybody knows the road is a nightmare. People already avoid it like the plague after 8am.

“Parents of children at Holt Farm Junior School will be left with no option but to clog up the new estate.

“The evidence is 'irrefutable. What more do they need to reject it?”

The Rochford Supporters have thanked Mark Francois, MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, for objecting to the plans and raising his concerns to Rochford Council.

The group have also thanked Marcus Hotten, a planning officer at Rochford Council for supplying the plans to allow the residents to see them on paper.

A spokesman for Essex County Council, said: “As the proposal is for a large amount of houses, the issues are complex and we are undertaking a detailed analysis of the likely impacts.

“Once those assessments have been completed we will be in a position to make a recommendation on the application.

“The final decision on whether the scheme is permitted or not would be for Rochford Council.”
