LOW-COST carrier EasyJet could resume flights from Southend Airport in July if talks prove fruitful.

EasyJet has confirmed some flights will start from other airports including Gatwick from June 15, travelling to destinations across Europe.

Although next month’s flights do not include Southend, holidaymakers may be able to book EasyJet flights from the airport from July for a short getaway or even a longer-haul holiday.

Due to the ever-changing circumstances, staff from EasyJet have stressed flights could be subject to change or cancellation.

A Southend Airport spokesman said: “EasyJet is starting to resume a very small number of domestic flights from Gatwick, and are in discussions with London Southend Airport around July operations. We are currently preparing for when passenger operations resume and implementing strict protocols to create a biosphere within the terminal to enable confidence in passengers when the time is right to travel.”

In an effort to keep passengers safe, new EasyJet measures will include additional cleaning and disinfection procedures for aircraft cabins.

In addition, passengers must wear masks at all times.

State-of-the-art filtration technology will also filter 99.97 per cent of airborne contaminants in the cabin.

Johan Lundgren, chief executive of EasyJet, said: “I’m really pleased that we will be returning to some flying in the middle of June.

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation across Europe so that when more restrictions are lifted the schedule will continue to build over time to match demand while also ensuring we are operating efficiently and on routes that our customers want to fly.

“Safety measures will remain for as long as is needed to ensure customers and crew are able to fly safely as the world continues to recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.”
