The 28-year-old of Pretoria Avenue, Laindon, was driving along the M1 when he crashed into the car near junction six in Hertfordshire.

Chloe Palmer, 19, was with three friends who were travelling home after a night of clubbing before the crash happened at around 3.30am.

The teenager suffered a brain injury after she was thrown from the car as a result of the impact.

Ms Palmer was rushed to hospital, but tragically she died six days later.

Lane was driving an Isuzu D-Max and was interviewed by police before being released under investigation.

He was later charged with causing death by dangerous driving, and two other counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Two of the other women were injured by the crash – one suffered serious head and chest injuries – and one escaped without being seriously hurt.

Lane admitted the charges in relation to the crash on November 25, 2017, and was jailed at St Albans Crown Court on Thursday.

Lane stated he had taken cocaine several hours before the crash happened, as he had been working a double shift as a driver, in the hope it would keep him awake.

But his car drifted across the lanes of the motorway and ended up crashing into the parked car.

In addition to his prison sentence Lane will also be disqualified from driving for two years after his release.
