KNIFE arches were deployed in the centre of Southend to keep people safe.

The Southend Town Centre Team from Essex Police were scanning people with the arches in the town on Tuesday.

The team were working with the Southend Business Improvement District and Southend Community Safety Team to check for anyone who may have been carrying weapons.

Luckily, no weapons were recovered during the day of searches.

A spokesman for the Town Centre Team said: "These operations are part of our every day work to keep people safe and to identify anyone who might be intent on committing crime before they do so.

"Our work under Operation Sceptre targets offenders involved in serious violence, particularly knife crime."
