THE police will be monitoring Camber Sands this weekend after officers were told of plans for an illegal event at the beach.

A “beach cook out” event on Sunday was circulating on social media, and coach tickets were said to have sold out.

Sussex Police and Rother District Council said they would disperse gatherings and turn away large groups.

The council has urged ticketholders to ask for a refund because permission for the event has not been granted. It warned people they could be breaking the law if more than 30 people gather.

In post on Facebook, the council said: “We have been made aware of plans for an organised event at Camber Sands beach this Sunday.

“This event has not been granted the relevant permission from Rother District Council or Sussex Police and will not be supported. Under current Government guidance in relation to Covid-19, it is against the law for gatherings of more than 30 people to take place in a public outdoor space without the completion of an appropriate risk assessment that has taken into account all risks, including Covid-19 restrictions, in full.

“Any event of more than 30 people, without agreement from the police and the local authority, will not be allowed to go ahead. Rother District Council and Sussex Police will be monitoring arrivals at the beach and will disperse or turn away any large groups or gatherings.

“Anyone who has bought a ticket for an event at Camber Sands beach should contact the event organiser and ask for a refund. Following this guidance is crucial in order to do your bit to protect yourself, your family, the NHS and your community.
