A HUGE search was launched after a concerning note and pair of trainers were found near the seafront.

Canvey Coastguard, along with Essex Police and the Metropolitan Police, launched a massive operation in the early hours of the morning following the discovery.

Residents were shocked to see a coastguard helicopter flying over the seafront at around 4.30am.

The search was sparked after a member of the public approached the coastguard at 3am yesterday.

The man had found a handwritten note and a pair of trainers on a bench next to the seawall off Western Esplanade.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “The note was signed by ‘Clint from East Ham’ and while there was no reference to any self-harm, the detail is still concerning.

“Our officers haven’t received any reports of missing people or anyone in distress near to or in water.

“We are keeping an open mind and we have officers in the area, who are working in partnership with the coastguard.

“We are also making our enquiries with our colleagues at the Metropolitan Police Service.”

Essex Police went from door to door yesterday conducting enquiries to try and establish the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

So far, no body has been discovered or missing person reported.

Residents reacted in shock at the news.

Janette Bull, who lives near Thorney Bay, witnessed the search.

She wrote on Facebook: “I saw the helicopter in the morning and officers with torches searching at seafront, I hope it is not real but then the resources it took is unreal but then hope the person is ok.”

Sarah Godber wrote: “So much stuff going on at the moment.

“You never know how someone is feeling so please be nice and look out for each other.

“Hope nothing bad has happened or that this isn’t a prank.”

Ray Large said: “I hope that this really turns out ok. But either way if it is for real or just a prank that person is going to need help of some sort, poss mentally. but obviously can’t be ignored. Respect to all the teams out searching.”
