A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of carrying a knife after police were forced to use additional stop and search powers in Leigh.

The arrest comes after Essex Police stepped up high visibility patrols around the area following threats of potential group violence and were given additional powers to help identify anyone who could be carrying a weapon.

The additional stop and search powers, which were enforced under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, saw one teenage boy arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife or bladed article.

He was later released without charge following enquiries.

During the searches, which covered areas across Leigh including Progress Road, The Fairway and Eastwood Road North, one vehicle was also seized for having no insurance.

Powers were in place from 11.30pm yesterday until 7.30am today, (August 16).

Police forced to use stop and search powers after threats of group violence in Leigh

Chief Inspector David Miles said: “The additional stop and search powers are a valuable tool to help us identify if anyone is carrying prohibited articles or offensive weapons, and helps us to disrupt criminal activity, take weapons off the streets and keep our community safe.

“It is reassuring that only one arrest was made and there were no incidents of violence reported.

“We will continue our routine patrols in the area with the aim of detecting and disrupting criminals. If anyone has any information, please contact us as it really does help us identify and deal with offenders and help keep people safe.”
