A police officer was dragged along a road by a moving car with another knocked over while attempting to stop a getaway vehicle.
An officer from Essex Police had attempted to remove the keys from the ignition of a Toyota Auris in the early hours of this morning, after it was reported to be uninsured.
The driver then drove off, dragging the officer a short way.
A man has been arrested following the incident, which happened at around 3.30am on Southchurch Road, Southend.
A pursuit was authorised with officers following the Toyota to Withypool, Southend.
As police got out of the vehicle, another officer was knocked over when the Toyota reversed.
A stinger was then used on Eastern Avenue to bring the rampant vehicle to a halt.
A 40-year-old man from Shoebury has been arrested on suspicion of assault, dangerous driving, failing to stop when directed and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
He remains in custody for questioning.
The two officers who were injured suffered minor injuries.
A spokesman from Essex Police, said: "Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call Southend CID on 101 quoting incident 269 of today’s date."
