A TORY MP has lamented easyJet’s move to axe flights from Southend, describing it as a “major blow”.

James Duddridge said he was disappointed with easyJet’s announcement announcing its plan to cancel all flights from Southend Airport from September 1.

The MP for Rochford and Southend East said: “This disappointing announcement will come as a blow to staff, passengers and Southend as a whole.

“The airport is of paramount importance to our town and our economy, and it’s really important that we continue to see it grow.

“The airline will always be welcome back and I do hope that one day we will see easyJet flights taking off from Southend once again. “

Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, was also saddened by the news.

He said: "Whilst I am not at all surprised by the announcement, easyJet have told me that they have come to an agreement with Unite about redundancy payments, so at least that is something.

"This is of course very disappointing news as the company provided half of the revenue for the airport.

"From a resident's point of view, whilst some might be relieved that there will be less flights, the irony is that easyJet were quieter than other airlines. Night flights and general pollution all remain serious issues.

"I hope that in light of this announcement by easyJet the airport will be able to restructure its business."

Rayleigh resident Steve Morgan said: “Massive shame that easyJet is pulling out of Southend.

“Always great service from ground and cabin crew.

“Farewell to all the staff based there. You did us proud.

“Hope to see you back again in future.

“It’s time to shine for Ryanair, with more reasonable fees for changes, sports luggage.”

Hayley Edwards, who lives near the airport, said: “Such a shame there was no way of easyjet staying at Southend.

“As a disabled person living just down the road from the airport it was so easy to get to and the airport is a breeze to go through.

“I also get very anxious when going through airports so again Southend was ideal as it’s not too big and the staff are amazingly helpful.

Kursaal ward councillor Matt Dent said: “It’s horrible news for those whose jobs will be affected.

“I hope they’ll be able to find alternative employment either elsewhere, or with another carrier out of Southend.

Southend Airport confirmed the news but did not respond to requests for further comment last night.
