A man who died after being hit by a lorry has been named.

Police, paramedics and emergency services rushed to Harris DAF on London Road, Grays, after receiving reports a pedestrian had been involved in a crash with a lorry.

The pedestrian, who sadly died at the scene, has now been identified as Paul Melville, who was 56 from Leigh.

Paul, who was a mechanic, had been at work when he was hit by a reversing lorry.

An inquest opened into Paul's tragic death at Essex Coroner's Court yesterday morning, and a police investigation into the incident has been launched.

Thurrock Council are also now investigating what happened.

A post mortem examination was carried out on August 20, but the cause of death has not yet been recorded as the coroner awaits toxicology results.

Emergency crews were called shortly after 6.45pm on Thursday August 13 and arrived swiftly to the incident, which happened near Lakeside, where they worked hard to save Mr Melville.

Despite the best efforts of the medical crew, he was pronounced dead by paramedics at 6.50pm.

A date for the full inquest has not yet been set, as the police investigation is ongoing.
