Public Health England data shows rise in south Essex Covid-19 cases

In the latest rolling seven-day rate of the virus in England, Castle Point has recorded the strongest rise in cases.

In the seven days up to September 1 – Tuesday last week – there were 22 cases of the virus confirmed per 100,000 people compared to just one in the previous seven days.

In Basildon there were 19 cases, compared to 11 the week before, and in Southend there were 18, a rise from 14 the week before.

Rochford was the only south Essex authority to see a decrease in the number of cases, going from seven to four cases per 100,000 people.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The highest rate in England was in Bolton, which had 265 new cases recorded in the seven days to September 1 – the equivalent of 92.2 per 100,000 people.

This is up sharply from 18.8 in the seven days to August 25.

Council leaders in Essex have previously attributed the rise in cases to an increase in the number of tests being carried out, and that there was “no cause for concern”.

The figures were released by Public Health England on Friday.
