DINERS stepped in to restrain a thug after he stormed into a restaurant to attack a man.
Essex Police received reports at around 1.55pm that a man entered Aspera Restaurant, in London Road, Benfleet, holding a dumbbell and knife.
A police spokesman said: "We believe that the man started shouting before he was restrained by customers.
"A man suffered a head injury during the incident and has been taken to hospital."
A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection to the incident.
Essex Police are treating this a targeted attack and say there is no wider risk to the public.
