A college has recorded one case of coronavirus - leaders have confirmed.

South Essex College has revealed one person at the Southend Luker Road campus tested positive for the virus.

A number of staff and pupils have been told to isolate for two weeks - but bosses have not yet revealed if a staff member of student tested positive for the virus.

A letter to parents says: "We have been made aware of a confirmed case of COVID 19 within our Luker Road campus. We know that you will find this concerning and we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England. This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide you with advice on any measures to be taken. Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness.

"The small number of young people who have been in direct contact with the individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 have been contacted directly and will be staying at home for 14 days. In addition, we have conducted a deep clean of all necessary areas of the college in line with government guidance. This means that the college remains open and you/your young person should continue to attend if you/they are well."
