THERE are 133 new coronavirus cases confirmed across Sussex in the past 48 hours.

During the period, Brighton and Hove’s total increased by 30 to 1,055.

East Sussex’s total climbed by 34 confirmed new cases to 1,936.

Meanwhile, West Sussex’s increased by 69 confirmed new cases to 3,431.

Across the United Kingdom, 5,693 people tested positive yesterday.

This is compared to an April peak of 5,488.

However, it should be noted that testing capacity is now considerably higher than it was previously.

The nation’s death toll increased by 17 to 41,988.

There are now 1,727 people in hospital with the virus.

Of those, 262 are in ventilator beds.

Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, has warned that rising number of new cases was a “stark warning for us all”.

She said: “The signals are absolutely clear.

“Positivity rates are rising across all age groups.

“We’re continuing to see spikes in rates of patient admission to hospitals and critical care as well.”
