A man was robbed of his car at knifepoint in the street which lead to police chasing the suspect on foot.
Officers were called shortly after midnight on Monday after a man's car had been stolen and he was threatened with a knife in Steeplehall in Basildon.
Officers located and pursued the stolen car and detained the driver.
Gary Macready, 37, of Town Square in Basildon was charged with robbery, possession of a knife blade or sharp pointed article in a public place and taking a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.
He is next dues to appear at Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday 27 October.
