South Essex: coronavirus cases continue to rise

The figures show, over the last seven days, 357 cases have been confirmed across Southend, Basildon, Castle Point, Rochford and Thurrock. 

The organisation publishes a seven-day rolling rate, showing the number of newly confirmed cases in that period, set against the number of cases confirmed in the previous seven-day period. 

Those figures are then presented as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

In Southend, there were 73 new cases confirmed, taking the rate to 39.9. That is a rise from 66 in the previous seven-day period, when the rate was 36.0. 

In Basildon, the rate has has jumped to 62.5 after 117 new cases were confirmed. That is a rise from a rate of 50.2 seven day earlier, when 94 cases were confirmed. 

Castle Point recorded 51 new cases in the most recent seven-day period taking the rate to 56.4. That is an increase from 36.5 seven days ago, when 33 new cases were confirmed. 

Rochford saw an increase to 36.6 after 32 cases were confirmed. Seven days previously, the rate was 18.3 after 16 new cases were confirmed. 

In Thurrock, the rate is now 48.2 after 84 new cases were confirmed. That is an increase from 35.6 seven days ago, when 62 new cases were confirmed. 

For comparison, Nottingham continues to have the highest rate in England, with 2,763 new cases recorded in the seven days to October 8 – the equivalent of 830.0 cases per 100,000 people.

This is a huge jump from 314.5 per 100,000 in the seven days to October 1.

Knowsley has the second highest rate, which has climbed from 485.9 to 669.5, with 1,010 new cases.

Liverpool is in third place, where the rate has increased from 504.4 to 598.5, with 2,981 new cases.

Other areas recording big jumps in their seven-day rates include:

• West Lancashire (up from 217.8 to 398.1, with 455 new cases);
• Exeter (up from 229.8 to 380.5, with 500 new cases);
• Blackburn with Darwen (up from 208.4 to 355.4, with 532 new cases); and
• Broxtowe (up from 115.8 to 265.7, with 303 new cases).
