An overwhelming majority of people want Watford’s indoor shopping centre to be renamed the Harlequin.

That is according to the results of a Watford Observer poll, which found that more than 90 per cent of readers want the change to be made from intu Watford after the shopping mall was put under new management.

Global Mutual was confirmed to have taken over as the asset manager of the centre earlier this week after intu fell into adminstration in June.

The takeover secures the future of the shopping centre, with intu Watford staff jobs also secure as they migrate to new property management company Savills.

But it looks like intu's orange branding and name will be disappearing from Watford with the existing name and branding only set to stay in place for an "interim period".

And the results of our poll show people want the shopping centre to be renamed once again as the Harlequin, which is what it was originally called before the change to intu Watford in 2013.

Out of 2,185 people who voted, 2,085 people (95 per cent) are for the return of the Harlequin, with just 100 people (five per cent) disagreeing.

And similar results were found in a poll conducted by Watford Liberal Democrats. Of 396 responses, 82 per cent of people said they want the Harlequin name to return.

Dawn Allen-Williamson, Liberal Democrat councillor, said: “I completely agree with the public on this, the name ‘The Harlequin’ is important to many of us in Watford and it makes sense to change the centre back to its original name.

“It also seems fitting that we have conducted this poll as the name of the centre was originally chosen by the public in a local competition in 1990. It would be nice to see the shopping centre come back around full circle.”
