ESSEX Police said it has “taken steps” to address recommendations of a domestic homicide review in Basildon.

The Southend Essex and Thurrock Domestic Homicide Review Core Group released a report into the death of a woman in her 30s in Basildon in 2018.

The woman’s real name was not revealed in the report, but given the name “Georgia”.

The report did not reveal the circumstances around the woman’s death, but detailed some of the events that led up to the incident, including agency responses and how she had moved to Essex from the Kent area.

The report highlighted one incident in October 2018 when Essex Police had visited the woman’s property following concerns from a neighbour about a long argument.

But the woman told police everything was ok, and she was the perpetrator, and the other person, whom she was in an intimate relationship with, was recorded as the victim, but no offences were reported.

The review questioned this decision, and recommended for Essex Police to review the automatic labelling and ‘perpetrator’ in non-crime domestic incidents in which the situation and context are not clear.

A police spokesman sent condolences to the woman’s family and said the force accepted the recommendations. They said the police have an assessment team in place which risk assess incident reports in real time, and they are looking into system labels to move away from “routine categorisation”.
