Almost 200 new coronavirus cases have been recorded across Southend and Essex in the latest 24-hour period, official figures show.

The number of recorded Covid cases in Southend increased by 20 in the latest 24-hour period, with Public Health England figures showing that 1,751 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Tuesday (November 10) in Southend.

This was up from 1,731 the same time on Monday.

Across the county, the number of recorded coronavirus cases in Essex increased by 171 during this period.

Public Health England figures show that 14,885 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Tuesday in Essex, up from 14,714 the same time on Monday.

The rate of infection in Southend now stands at 956 cases per 100,000 people, while the rate of infection in Essex now stands at 1,000 cases per 100,000 people - both far lower than the England average of 1,871.

The health body is now including Pillar 2 tests – those carried out by commercial partners – alongside Pillar 1 tests, which are analysed in NHS or PHE laboratories and which made up the first stage of the Government's mass testing programme.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 20,412 over the period, to 1,233,775.

And both Southend and Essex's cases were among the 63,903 recorded across the East of England, a figure which rose by 1,002 over the period.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.
