A SPORTS centre is to shut its doors permanently because it is “no longer financially viable” as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Everlast Fitness Club, based in Bournes Green Chase, Thorpe Bay wrote to members this week to confirm it would not re-open following lockdown.

Bosses had been attempting to renegotiate rent with the landlord since the site was one of 45 DW Fitness Clubs bought out of administration by Everlast Fitness in August.

But with talks proving unsuccessful, owners were left fearing the sports centre would not be sustainable.

Some users had been using the site since the 80s - when it was formerly Courtlands Health and Country Club.

Sally Whittle, owner of Miss Whittle Beauty, says she will now have to find a new home for her salon, which currently lives in the centre.

The 35-year-old from Westcliff, explained: "Obviously this was quite a shock to us when we were told the news Friday.

"I've been there for six and-a-half years now, and I really do love my salon. But I no longer have access to it anymore with the building shut.

"Heartbroken is an understatement. I will miss all of it, even the building itself. It's a community hub which is so special to myself, the members, the staff - it's been part of the area for a long time.

"Now I have to look for a different site for the salon. Thankfully I've got a fantastic client base, so it's now a case of finding a new home.

"I hope someone will take it over and get it up and running again."

Paul Wallace, 41, from Shoebury, added: “This is the tip of the ice berg for me, this is my local club. Sadly, now that the last remaining squash club has shut, that’s around four clubs shut over last 20 years.

“I use the centre quite regularly and was part of team that was re-introducing squash lessons for the local community this year. This is a massive loss, it is devastating for the many that use it.

“This place provided the only squash courts in the area along with swimming pool and other children-led activities such as the dance school, all of which have now ceased to operate.

"There’s a cafe, a beautician which runs from here, and the nearest place for squash now is Clements Hall. Lots of kids also come from Thorpe Hall School for swimming.

“It would be very sad if the club was turned into houses or flats and if we completely lost these leisure facilities that are so important to so many people. I want to know what will happen to the facility moving forward.”

Users who have already paid for November’s membership by direct debit are set to be given a full refund.

In an email to centre users, a spokesperson from Everlast Fitness Clubs, said: “It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that Thorpe Bay - Southend fitness club will not be reopening when lockdown restrictions in England are lifted.

“We want to say an enormous thank you to all of our members, who have been loyal and supportive over many years. We must also thank the staff for their devotion.”
