THE latest coronavirus data has been published with cases and infection rates on the rise across south Essex.

The infection rate in Basildon has almost doubled compared to the week before, with 453 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in the seven day period.

The towns rate now sits at 242 per 100,000, a jump from 131 per 100,000.

The figures, for the week up to November 15, are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

Southend has also had a rise in the infection rate, now 179 per 100,000, with 328 new cases reported.

The rate of infection in Castle Point now sits 182 per 100,000 following the confirmation of 164 for new cases.

This is a rise from a rate of 142 the week before.

The data also shows a rise in the infection rate in Thurrock and Brentwood, with 384 and 202 new coronavirus cases reported respectively.

Thurrock's infection rate sits at 220 per 100,000, while Brentwood's has been confirmed as 202.

Data for the most recent four days, November 16-19, has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

A majority of areas in England, 197 out of 315, have seen a rise in cases.
