A huge group of Covid-19 anti-mask protesters have joined in the town centre to fight Government rules.

The group were seen in Cherrydown East in Basildon this afternoon - with placards and signs.

It comes as police are cracking down on rule breakers across the borough by arresting revellers at an illegal event in the town.

Huge crowds were seen in Sparrows Herne with multiple people being held down in the road by large numbers officers.

Protesters with megaphones were accusing police of being heavy handed.

Gavin Callaghan, Labour leader of Basildon Council took to Facebook to slam the protesters.

He said: "Covid-19 fatigue is real and understandable. Covid-19 denial isn’t. It’s just selfish and prolonging restrictions for everyone else.

"If you’re one of the people “protesting” against the virus today in Basildon town Centre, you really can do one. And please don’t play with sharp objects, unsupervised."
