Plans are being drawn up to use an iconic seafront site for cultural activities, say council bosses.

Southend's Kursaal is being eyed up for event organisers for cultural activities.

It comes after The Concrete Culture, an ambitious group of artists and musicians group, is in the process of drawing up a range of ideas for the seafront building - including art exhibitions, a food court and market, as well as a stage for performances.

Council papers from last night's meeting show plans are being drawn up with event bosses visiting the site.

Labour ward councillor Matt Dent asked for an update on the situation and plans to re-open the site.

Kevin Robinson, Labour councillor for business, culture and tourism said: "Officers in the culture and property teams maintain a good dialogue with agents Sorrel and the fund managers of the Kursaal who are working on both short and long term plans.

"In the short term opportunities for the building to be used for temporary cultural activities are being considered subject to their financial viability.

"Viewing have been held this week enabling prospective occupiers to work up a business plan and seek funding for their proposal."
