A WASTE plant firm that was fined millions over failings is now making “up to 40 members of staff redundant”, says a worker.

Staff at the Basildon Tovi Eco Plant, off Courtauld Road, Basildon, say they could be facing job losses and feel they are being left in the dark about the site’s future.

It comes after the firm was fined millions in June due to failings over waste management.

Bosses at the site confirmed a redundancy consultation is ongoing, but said they cannot comment further.

The worker, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “We were told that we were going to be made redundant, some 40-plus people.

“We have been kept in the dark as to the direction the facility will take, when asking senior management we get the same answer blaming the council.

“The way we have been led to perceive all of this is in the nature of a school yard argument with employees the losers and as such left without any information.”

In June it was announced Essex County Council had been awarded £10million from the firm over ongoing issues with Tovi Eco Park in Courtauld Road, run by Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB).

The facility began processing waste from across Essex in 2014, but during its commissioning period several performance issues were found.

Owners at the waste plant alleged that failings at the site were due to the wrong type of waste being sent by the county council.

Then it was announced household waste from across the county will be sent to landfill for at least the next six months as a result of the failed Tovi Eco Park.

The worried worker added he has concerns about the future running of the waste plant.

He said staff are left in the dark over whether it will it reopen and deal less waste or close down.

The worker fears the site could be shut down at the cost of the tax payers and the environment.

A spokesman for Urbaser which employs staff for the plant said: “The redundancy consultation has started and it’s an ongoing process.”
