The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Essex, Southend and Thurrock increased by 1,769 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

Public Health England figures show that 86,535 people in the Essex area had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Wednesday (January 13) in Essex, up from 85,172 the same time on Tuesday.

The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Southend increased by 183 in the same period - 11,355 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Wednesday (January 13) in Southend, up from 11,172 the same time on Tuesday.

In Thurrock, the number of cases rose by 223 which means that 14,255 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Wednesday (January 13) in Thurrock, up from 14,032 the same time on Tuesday.

In Thurrock, the infection rate is 8,177 cases per 100,000 people, far higher than the England average of 4,881.

In Southend and wider Essex, the rate of infection in Essex now stands at 5,811 cases per 100,000 people, far higher than the England average of 4,881.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 47,525 over the period, to 3,211,576.

Essex's cases were among the 276,767 recorded across the East of England, a figure which rose by 4,821 over the period.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.
