THREE areas in south Essex have seen dramatic drops in Covid infection rates, with some almost halving.

The latest figures have revealed that Basildon, Brentwood, and Thurrock, are all part of the top ten towns which have seen the largest falls in Covid rates.

Brentwood sits in second, with a fall in rates from 1,030 per 100,000, to 499, while Basildon quickly follows suit, with a drop from 1,154 to 635 per 100,000 people.

And Thurrock, which rounds off the top ten , saw a fall from 1,357 per 100,000 people, to 924.

The latest figures, released on Sunday, show that of the 315 local areas in England, 36 have seen a rise in case rates while 279 have seen a fall.

Knowsley in Merseyside has the highest rate in England, with 1,853 new cases recorded in the seven days to January 13 – the equivalent of 1,228.3 cases per 100,000 people.
