A dozen new deaths linked to Covid-19 have been confirmed at hospitals in South Essex.
Eight of the fatalities which have been announced today (Tuesday, January 19) happened at the Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Seven occurred on Saturday and the other on Sunday. It takes the total number of coronavirus-related deaths at the hospital to 708.
There have been 68 deaths recorded in the past week at Basildon Hospital, up from 56 the previous week.
At Southend Hospital, four more Covid deaths have been announced today – taking its total to 554.
All four deaths occurred between January 3 and 12.

It means there have been 70 deaths announced at Southend Hospital in the past week, down from 80 the previous week.
A further 842 hospital deaths linked to Covid-19 have been announced by NHS England today.
Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.
This means some of the deaths that were first recorded in the latest period may actually have taken place days earlier.
NHS England guidance states: "Confirmation of Covid-19 diagnosis, death notification and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure."
