AN "UTTERLY remorseless" rapist has been handed an 11 year sentence for his attack on a sex worker.

Kye Lewis showed no emotion as Judge Samantha Cohen handed out her sentence for two counts of rape, which took place in the Sutton Road cemetery on July 11, 2017.

Judge Cohen formed the view that Lewis, of Archer Avenue, Southend, had intentionally gone out that night looking for someone to rape.

Adressing him, she said: "Having heard the evidence in the trial, I am satisfied you went out that evening looking for someone to rape.

"You armed yourself with a machete, hidden in the pocket on the door and went to a red light district looking for a sex worker.

"You drove her to the Sutton Road cemetery. She wanted to stop and go somewhere else on route, but you were determined to take her there.

"It can't be by chance that you drove her to the unlit part of the cemetery. You wanted to go to a place where you wouldn't be disturbed.

"You told her she was going to get raped."

Judge Cohen then recapped the horrendous details where the woman was raped twice by Lewis on the front of his car.

He then left her semi-naked, taking her handbag with him as he drove off.

Judge Cohen continued: "I am sure you did that to prevent her calling for help.

"She managed to dress and make her way to the house of a friend."

The judge praised the victim, saying she was an "impressive" witness who was "clearly very stressed" over what had happened.

The judge also praised the victim's friend who she went to following the offence, saying that due to her profession, she had been unsure to go to the police and whether she would be taken seriously.

She said the man was to be "commended" for his kindness.

Lewis, throughout two trials over the offences, maintained that he did not rape the woman and that she had made the claims up because he underpaid her.

The judge said: "That account was rejected by the jury and it seems to me that you remain utterly remorseless about what you have done."

The court was also told that Lewis has a child with a former partner, and that he was an "experienced criminal" with 16 court appearances for 57 offences.

Judge Cohen concluded that Lewis was a danger to others and posed serious risk of harm, giving him an 11 year sentence with seven in prison and four on licence.

This will be on top of the five years and four months he received in July 2019 for robbing a woman in Priory Park, Southend in June that year.

Helen Walsh, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “We were able to show to the court that Kye Lewis acted without the consent of his victim and used a weapon to instil fear into her. He subsequently committed two acts of rape for his own sexual gratification and without thought for his victim.

“The CPS is committed to prosecute cases of rape and serious sexual offences vigorously and fairly.”

“Rape is sex without consent, and consent can be withdrawn at any time. In this instance the victim did not consent to Kye Lewis’s demands and bravely came forward to talk to the police and give her evidence in court.”

"We want every victim of rape to have the confidence that where there is sufficient evidence, the CPS will prosecute those who commit this heinous crime.”
