A PREGNANT woman has been jailed for more than two years for biting a man and stealing 17 bottles of wine.

Stacy Kennedy has been locked up after causing actual bodily harm to a man after being removed from a hair salon which she tried to burgle.

The 32-year-old was sentenced on Wednesday for the crimes committed back in 2019.

Kennedy, of Ceylon Road, Westcliff, was previously sentenced for attempted robbery and assaulting emergency workers in October last year.

She had tried to rob a phone from a woman at Westcliff Train Station, and then later assaulted officers when she was arrested.

She was given a suspended sentence for those offences, however, for reasons unknown she was not sentenced for the offences of actual bodily harm and burglary.

Kennedy was brought back before the courts after she was caught stealing 17 bottles of wine from the Co-Op store in London Road, Westcliff on December 8 last year.

She along with two other women were found in a nearby convenience store where they had tried to sell on the wine, but it was recovered.

Basildon Crown Court heard that Kennedy had also been found with three wraps of heroin and eight wraps of crack cocaine.

At her sentencing hearing, Gareth Hughes, prosecuting, recounted the events of Kennedy’s previous offending at the hair salon in Westcliff on November 30, 2019.

This was the same day as the attempted robbery at Westcliff Train Station.

He said: “At 10.50am she entered the salon, walked to the back and entered a treatment room where she closed the door and attempted to lock herself in that room.

“Staff forced entry into the room and she is rifling through personal belongings of staff in that room.

“When detained she had taken a phone, keys and some other personal items.”

Mr Hughes said a member of staff then tried to remove Kennedy.

He said: “She punched his arm and also bit him in the chest area, drawing blood and scratching his face.”

Mitigating, Cathryn Sutcliffe told the court Kennedy had a history of alcohol abuse and suffered with drug addictions.

Ms Sutcliffe said Kennedy had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

She added: “She took a pregnancy test and is now 14 weeks pregnant. She’s had to stop taking her medication.

“Her sister has offered her somewhere to live with her child.

“She would like an opportunity to comply with her order.”

Kennedy admitted breaching her previous suspended sentence order, and the court was told the value of the wine stolen in December was £106.75.

However, Recorder Paul Sharkey chose to activate Kennedy’s suspended sentence and send her straight to jail for 30 months.

He said that the injuries she caused to the man were “unpleasant” and stated her previous compliance with other community orders and sentences had been “poor”.

Kennedy must serve at least half her sentence in jail before being eligible for release on parole.
