A major south Essex road has been closed after a large pipe burst and water is freezing on the ground.

The A127 Southend bound is now closed due to the burst water main in the road. Highways bosses say water from a burst water main is freezing on the A127.

The major road is shut from West Mayne in Dunton down to the Fortune of War Roundabout in Laindon. Drivers are warned to avoid the area if possible as long delays are expected.

It's unclear how long the road will be shut for at this stage.

A spokesperson for Essex & Suffolk Water said: “Our team are working hard to repair a burst water main on the A127 at Dunton. Some customers may experience problems with their supply, including low pressure, while this work takes place.

“Due to ice forming on the road, the decision has been taken with Essex Police to close the Southend-bound carriageway, for the safety of motorists and the team working on the repair.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank customers and motorists for their patience. Updates will be available as we have them on our Twitter feed @eswater_care.”
