CAMPAIGNING parents are demanding action over a “danger street” in which eight out of ten motorists were found to flout the speed limit. 

Elm Road, in Shoebury, has moved to top spot in the league table of worst roads for speeding in Southend. 

Now, Amy Green, 27, of Elm Road has launched a petition calling for action after a series of crashes in the road which create a dangerous environment for families.

Council bosses will meet next week to consider measures for the nine worst roads in Southend, including road markings, installing islands to reduce the road’s width, speed cameras and ramps. 

Ms Green said: “A year ago mum bought an Audi and a woman went into it and wrote it off. Then on Monday at 11.30pm a young driver hit my mum’s work van, my mum and dad’s Kia and my sister-in-law’s BMW. We are just waiting for the insurance to tell us whether they are write offs.

“I started the petition because I have a five-year-old daughter and if she or my mum had been getting in or out of the cars they wouldn’t be here.” 

The petition has already reached 70 signatures in 24 hours.

Ms Green added: “I would like to see some measure like speed humps. Anything to make drivers more aware.

“I have been here two years and I believe there has been four accidents but I’ve asked police to supply some statistics. Something has to be done about it.”

Another resident supporting the petition said motorists treat the road like a "race track".

The road, where 80 per cent of drivers were found to be speeding, has overtaken Whitehouse Road, Southend as the “most dangerous street” when other factors such as skid potential are factored in.

Other danger roads are Whitehouse Road, Eastwood; Eastwood Road North, Leigh; Eastwoodbury Lane, Eastwood; Eastern Esplanade, Southend; Station Road, Leigh Green Lane, Eastwood; Station Road, Westcliff; Western Approaches, Eastwood
