A rescue operation was launched after cries for help could be heard out at sea near Chalkwell.
The coastguard says it received two 999 calls about concerns for a swimmer in the waters of Chalkwell Beach earlier today (Thursday, February 25).
The first person reported they had heard calls for help from the direction of a swimmer wearing a yellow swimming cap.
Both the coastguard and RNLI went out to investigate and were informed by other people in the area that they too had heard cries for help.
The teams spoke to a swimmer in a yellow had matching the description who was no longer in the water.

The swimmer insisted they had not been in distress and left the scene.
Both the coastguard and RNLI conducted a further search of the area/water, before they were then stood down and returned to their respective bases.
A coastguard spokesman described the incident as a “false alarm with good intent”.
He added: “Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you could save someone’s life.”
