ROGUE traders failed in their to con a 93-year-old, police have revealed.

Two bogus workmen tried to con the pensioner on Alderwood Way, Benfleet, this week, but were unsuccessful thanks to a quick-thinking neighbour.

The resident refused the pair entry to the 93-year-old's home, after they requested to climb onto the roof.

Police have confirmed the two suspects fled the scene in a red van, once being rumbled by the neighbour.

The force has now issued a warning surrounding rogue traders in Benfleet.

A spoksman from Essex Police, said: "Rogue traders have been reported to be operating in Benfleet.

"On February 23, in Alderwood Way, two workmen have tried to con a 93-year-old by trying to gain access to her roof.

"Fortunately a neighbour attended and refused them entry, making it very clear that she knew what they were up to. The two suspects quickly left the scene in a red van.

"Please keep an eye out for your neighbours or family members that may be vulnerable to rogue trader activity.

"Keep cold callers out of your home, always check any ID they present and call their head office (using a number you have researched not one they have given you).

"Never agree to work without getting a full written quote, check the company is legitimate and preferably use recommended traders or those with positive ratings on websites such as checkatrade.com or trustatrader.com.

"Always take time to consider a quote, this will give you time to discuss with friends and family.

"If you are vulnerable and feel concerned or have been threatened or intimidated, call us on 999."
