Motorists have been warned to prepare for delays amid plans to replace outdated traffic lights.

Essex Highways says it could take up to four weeks to renew traffic signals at the London Road/ Rectory Road junctions in Hadleigh.

Works are due to get underway on March 15 and will see both lane restrictions and temporary traffic lights installed.

Some overnight closures may also be required but dates have yet to be confirmed.

Bosses say the exisiting traffic lights need to be replaced "before they become unreliable and fail to work properly".

Contractors will be installing new extra low voltage equipment, which is better for the environment.

Activities will include the replacing or renewing of underground cable ducts under the carriageway, as well as replacing equipment above ground.

During recent improvement works in the area, ducting has been installed along paths to reduce the likelihood of damaging them.

Bosses say the majority of the works will be carried out during the day Monday to Friday, and only a "limited" number of overnight closures will be required.

An Essex Highways spokesman said: "Advance warning notices will be used to advertise the works and appropriate diversions in place during temporary road closures.

"Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and for safety, we propose to install a temporary controlled pedestrian crossings across London Road whilst the works are undertaken.

"We urge all drivers to take additional care and observe traffic management and signage in place during the closures."

Bosses say dates may be subject to change if the works are affected by poor weather conditions or if unexpected issues arise.
