ALARMING pictures have revealed how a huge pile of rubbish caught fire in the back of a dustcart.
The rubbish, which has been left blowing across Clarence Road, in Rayleigh, was swiftly dumped by waste collectors this morning.
The waste had caught alight in the back of the lorry, before being removed amid fears the fire would spread into the cab.
Residents of road have been left in shock and wondering how the rubbish will be cleared.
The Echo understands the fire was caused by a faulty battery in the bin lorry.
Simon Bishop, said: "I was about to nip down to the shops, but I couldn't get out.
"I could hear the sirens but didn't realise they were so close.
"It's blowing everywhere at the moment."
A clean up operation has now been launched.
A spokesman from Rochford Council, said: "We have been informed the waste truck on the Clarence Road and Leslie Road junction had a contained fire in the rear of the vehicle this morning.
"Fire crews arrived at the scene and the fire was put out.
"Crews are still onsite removing the debris, we ask that you please refrain from taking photographs so the crew can safely proceed to clear up.
"Thank you for your co-operation."
The fire service was contacted for comment.
