An illegal camp of four caravans and two vans have pitched up outside a rugby club.

The vehicles have parked up outside Basildon Rugby Club, Gardiners Close, Basildon.

It comes after new laws were brought in that will see travellers be booted off land almost immediately and facing fines of up to £2,500.

Gas cannisters and water containers have been set up outside the caravans near the rugby club.

Club Treasurer, Dave Hare said: "They're parked up right outside our gates and we can see them on our CCTV.

"I know we've had them there before in the past."

As part of the so-called Irish Option, police will have the power to remove illegal encampments almost straightaway.

Under the new law, trespassing is now an illegal act.

Both MP’s and police chiefs have expressed their delight at the move.

A spokesperson for the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit said: “We are aware of this encampment and have commenced our proceedings on this encampment.”
