HOLIDAYMAKERS will be able to capitalise on trips to Greece this summer as Ryanair increases flights from Southend to meet demand.

Ryanair has announced the new flights to Greece from Southend Airport from July 1.

It comes after the country’s tourism minister, Harry Theoharis, said the country would welcome back tourists from May 14, without a need to show proof of a Covid-19 vaccine to enter.

However, travellers would still need to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken before travel.

Ryanair plans to increase the number of flights to Corfu each week from three to four.

Glyn Jones, chief executive of Southend Airport, says the site will be ready for passengers in May.

He said: “This increase in flights to Corfu with Ryanair demonstrates underlying demand for European travel is strong, whether it is for rescheduled bookings, trips to visit family and friends who we haven’t seen for many months, or well deserved holidays.

“We are ready to welcome passengers back to Southend Airport, which we have worked hard to make as Covid-safe as possible, when government guidance allows.

“This is currently expected to be from May 17, though airline schedules may differ.

“Several European countries are welcoming visitors from the UK and we remind passengers to check regulations from both the UK and at your destination.”

Councillors welcomed the addition and say they hope it sees the airport’s recovery post Covid.

David McGlone, Tory councillor for St Laurence Ward, said: “I really hope this is the start of the airport recovering following the Covid pandemic.

“I say bring it on as we’ve been in lockdown for so long and people need some form of escape.

“I welcome this and it’ll be just in time for the summer holidays.

“Perhaps Ryanair is anticipating things will be almost normal as the Covid vaccine programme is going so well.”

Mr McGlone said he hopes residents will be just as pleased about the extra flights.

He added: “I hope the vast majority is residents welcome this too as they are keen to see an end to the Covid pandemic and lockdowns in the safest way.

“It’s an immensely popular airport and is not just for people who live in Southend but attracts passengers from a two hour radius.”

Holidaymakers also hailed the new weekly flight to Greece.

Karen Osborne, 49, from Leigh said: “Well I can’t wait for this and we all need a getaway.

“I will be booking and hoping it’s not stopped due to Covid.

“I think it will be popular and there should be good take up.”
