AN Essex University student caused a stir on social media after his winning appearance on ITV's The Chase.

Jerome, a 21-year-old politics student who lives in Colchester, had the last laugh however, bagging £5,000 in his cash builder and safely making it back to join his team after two tense one-question shoot-outs with Chaser Shaun Wallace.

He jumped up and down as he got through and said: "I'm about to have a heart attack."

Jerome also smashed the final chase, ending up winning the show for his team.

Host Bradley Walsh said: "13 questions out of 20. A 21-year-old. What a job."

The three players through to the final - Carolyn, Dave and Jerome - took £14k home between them.

It wasn't Jerome's performance answering the questions which got viewers at home riled, however.

Speaking to the host Jerome said he was into "self improvement" in order to be in the best physical, mental and spiritual shape he could be.

He told Bradley Walsh he'd use his potential winnings on a trip to Cuba.

Despite his success on the show, viewers obviously didn't warm to him.

Some took to Twitter, with some proclaiming him the "most annoying" contestant the show had ever had.

The Chase hashtag was trending on Thursday.
