Engineers have now confirmed that delays on the A127 are caused by a leak from a gas valve.
Firefighters are continuing to work alongside Essex Police and the gas board to make the scene on the A127 safe.
The main road is closed between Nestuda Way and Eastern Avenue at the junction with Rochford road.
The A127 is closed in both directions while firefighters work to make the area safe.
Long delays remain on all approaches.
Three fire trucks attended the scene - one from Leigh fire station and two from Southend.
People who live in the area have been urged to keep their windows and doors shut.
The fire service have also insisted people avoid travelling near the area.
