PLANS have been drawn up for a major revamp of Basildon Hospital’s 48-year-old entrance, with new shops and office space proposed.

If agreed the project will see the entrance to the hospital relocated and new plaza-style

Plans say the current restaurant would move back into unused kitchen space and the development would then see a resized restaurant and kitchen, new office and shop space created alongside the new entrance area.

If the plans get the green light from the council, it is hoped the project would be completed by summer 2022.

The proposals also include a dedicated area for the hospital charity and a new bereavement suite.

Derek Fellowes, Independent councillor for Nethermayne welcomed the investment in the hospital.

He said: “More hospitals are adding more commercial space as it’s a source of income.

“If it benefits residents and especially those in my ward then I welcome this.

“It will be nice for people to be able to get a decent cup of coffee while they are waiting for an appointment or to be seen by a medical professional.”

Hospital bosses say it will improve patient experience after the entrance has remained unchanged for decades.

A spokesman said: “The hospital opened in 1973 and apart from some minor interior alterations, the main entrance has remained the same.

“The proposed new two-storey entrance would enhance the main entrance at Basildon Hospital, and give improved access from the car park and public transport.”

Plans say there would also be a new garden area between the restaurant and the maternity building to allow staff, patients and visitors to enjoy outdoor space.

If agreed the existing entrance will be used as a fire escape while the existing signage and canopy will be removed and visitors will be directed towards the new entrance.

Basildon Council is set to make a decision by July 8.
