Nearly two-thirds of adults in Southend and Basildon have now had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

NHS data shows 90,962 people had received a vaccine jab by April 11 – 62% of those aged 16 and over

Of those vaccinated, 64,869 were aged 50 and over – 92% of the age group.

It means 26,093 people aged between 16 to 49 have received a first dose of the vaccine.

In Basildon, 91,005 people have had their first Covid jab – 62% of adults.

A total of 64,050 of those residents were aged 50 and over – 95% of the age group.

That means 26,955 people aged between 16 to 49 have received a first dose of the vaccine.

In Castle Point meanwhile, 68% of adults have now had their first jab.

Of the 50,702 people to have had their first dose, 39,294 were aged 50 and over – 95% of the age group.

This means 11,408 people aged between 16 to 49 have had their first jab.

The neighbourhoods in the three boroughs where the most adults have been vaccinated include:

  • Canvey Island Leigh Beck - 73.3%
  • Canvey Island Newlands - 73.1%
  • Hadleigh North - 71.8%
  • Wickford West - 70.7%
  • Thorpe Bay - 70.6%
  • Southchurch - 69.3%
  • Eastwood - 69.2%
  • Billericay Tye Common - 69.1%
  • Eversley - 68.2%

Other areas are further behind in vaccinating adults, with places such as Southend Central (52.6%) and Laindon Central (51.9%) seeing just over half recieving the jab so far.

It comes as figures show one in five care home staff in Southend have yet to recieve a single dose of the Covid vaccine.

A total of 1,488 out of 1,892 eligible staff, including agency workers, at older adult care homes had received a first dose by April 11, according to latest NHS figures – meaning 21% have not had a jab.

The unvaccinated proportion has reduced from four weeks previously, when it was 27%. And the area is still not meeting recommendations from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) which state four in five staff need to be vaccinated to provide a minimum level of protection against outbreaks.

Across the East of England, 22% of eligible care home workers had not been vaccinated by April 11, while across England that figure stood at 21%.
