A group of travellers has set up camp on a site set to become new council homes.

The six caravans and other vehicles are pitched up on the former car park 14, off Laindon Link, Basildon.

About 230 flats will be built on the car park land, with two ten-storey buildings included as part of the Chapelgate plans.

As part of the development, by Basildon Council’s building arm Sempra, there will be two buildings of eight storeys, two buildings of six storeys, and another at four storeys.

It's not the first time travellers have pitched up on the land, last November 10 caravans were seen at the empty car park site.

A Basildon Council Spokesperson said: “The council is aware of an unauthorised encampment of four caravans and one motorhome on land adjacent to Laindon Link, known as car park 14.

“The land is owned by Sempra Homes and the Essex County Traveller Unit visited the site yesterday to begin the process of eviction from the land.”
