Coastguards rushed to reports of a large mammal with a fin ... which turned out to be a plank of wood.
The Southend team was alerted to an object resembling a large mammal with a fin near Thorpe Bay Yacht Club slip 8.15am this morning.
The team attended the scene and the object started to float on the outgoing tide and was near Uncle Toms cabin in Shoebury
The team kept tracking the object and called in the Southend RNLI.
A spokesman said: "Southend Coastguard guided the crew towards the location which had drifted past Barge Pier and into choppier water so the team lost sight from shore.
"After a brief search by the life boat crew, they located an object and radioed back to confirm they had picked up a large piece of drift wood but which had an upward point which 'could' resemble a fin at distance.
"Both teams continued a further search of the locale from onshore and offshore to confirm no other object was in the water."
