A THUG shoved his pregnant partner against a wall – and harassed her by calling more than 150 times in a few days.

Recorder Leslie Cuthbert granted Gary Cushen’s wish to have “time to reflect” on the “monster” he has become by throwing him behind bars for a year.

The 35-year-old was told by his partner she no longer wanted him in the house due to how much stress his behaviour was causing him.

Cushen had come back to her home in Westcliff on October 3 last year after a night out, when she told him he wasn’t welcome there.

Following a row over him taking keys to the home, he pushed his back against her forcing her into the wall, causing pain and concern for her unborn child.

After this, Cushen carried out a campaign of harassment against the woman, grabbing her arm outside her GP, and bombarding her with phone calls. Over the course of several days in October, he rang her 151 times from his number, and then numerous times from withheld numbers.

The woman reported it to the police, and while an officer was with her taking a statement, Cushen kept calling her.

The woman told the officer “I never answer the call, but I wanted to show you it was him”.

In December, after Cushen was arrested and bailed, he went to the woman’s home despite being barred, making legal threats to her and demanded she drop the charges against him.

Cushen, of Springfield Road, Grays, admitted assault, harassment and breaching a non-molestation order.

At Basildon Crown Court, Oliver Kirk, mitigating, said: “He is a man facing up to the sort of monster he had become in those sorts of relationships.

“That realisation has weighed heavily on him. He is resolved to address these problems.”

Recorder Cuthburt told Cushen: “If it’s further time for reflection you require, that may be something I can asist you with.”
