A BRAWL at a Southend United football match saw a hooligan throw a sausage roll at a steward.

Supporters of Barnsley FC have been given a football ban after the brawl at Roots Hall stadium in 2019.

One fan, Curtis Horbury, became enraged after incorrectly hearing stewards had hit a disabled person, leading him to join the fight and throw a sausage roll at the staff.

The fight began shortly before half time during the game on March 3 that year, when stewards received reports fans in the away stand were standing on chairs.

They walked up to the area and began talking to the fans, telling one he had to leave.

The fan, Kyle Swann, who was allegedly standing on the chair, refused, and tensions rose and violence then broke out.

It began with pushing and shoving but then progressed to punches being swung with some making contact and stewards were forced to the floor.

Prosecuting, Ed Renvoize said the stewards were still attacked while on the floor. He said: “There was distress not only for the stewards but also for the football supporters who were not engaging with them.”

The Barnsley fans were later charged in relation to the brawl and have been sentenced at Basildon Crown Court.

Judge Samantha Leigh told Horbury: “You wrongly made yourself involved in the situation, you made full admissions that you shouldn’t have got involved.

“You also accepted that you threw the sausage roll at the stewards.”

Mitigation for the fans said they were remorseful.

Horbury, 22, of Station Street, Rotherham, along with Swann, 20, of Laithes Lane, Barnsley, Darren Kennett, 54, Harvey Kennett, 19, father and son both of Newstead Road, Barnsley, admitted affray.

Cameron Rose, 23, of Wombwell, Barnsley, and Jonathan Senior, 28, of Calabria Grove, Barnsley, admitted a section four public order offence, as their involvement was more limited.

Horbury, the Kennetts and Swann received a three year football ban and curfew orders. Senior and Rose received curfews for one and four months.
