More than 100 protesters marched through Southend yesterday object to the government's proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which is making its way through Parliament.
More than 150 people marched in Southend High Street and joined the protest in Warrior Square in the town.
The Bill was drafted partly in response to previous disruptive action by both groups.
The proposed legislation would give police in England and Wales more powers to impose conditions on non-violent protests – including those deemed too noisy or a nuisance, with those convicted liable to fines or jail terms.
The Southend protest was organised by campaigning group Kill The Bill Consortium.
The campaigners say the Bill will have wide-reaching implications for peaceful protest and that it's a serious threat to democracy.
The march and rally was part of a national campaign with similar protests taking place in Colchester, London and Bristol.
