THE A127 is blocked between the Fairglen Interchange and Rayleigh Weir causing severe delays for motorists.
The AA says traffic travelling to Southend is queuing folllowing an accident.
Sensors suggest there is no traffic getting through on the Southend-bound carriageway, the AA adds.
Traffic was also slow heading London-bound because of motorists slowing to look at the crash scene.
Eyewitnesses posting on social media say the "nasty accident" Southend-bound involves a motorbike.
The AA's traffic and travel map said at 7.50pm: "A127 Southend Arterial Road Eastbound blocked, queueing traffic due to accident from A1245 (Fairglen Interchange) to A129 Rayleigh Road (Rayleigh Weir). Sensors suggest no traffic getting through on the eastbound side. Affecting traffic heading towards Southend-on-Sea."
