THREE crews remained at the scene of a fire in Southend last night as they worked to eliminate remaining hotspots of the blaze.
Firefighters were called to reports of a fire near Southend United's football stadium at around 6.30pm yesterday where a "large quantity of astroturf" was alight.
Four crews attended the scene at Roots Hall Avenue to help prevent the spread of the fire.
At 7pm, the incident commander reported that steady progress was being made after "several tonnes" of astroturf continued to be "around 20 per cent alight".
At 10pm, three crews remained at the scene.
A mechanical digger was expected to begin moving around material to help crews eliminate any remaining fire hotspots.
