A festival heralding the talents of local artists is set to launch later this month in Carlisle and has received the backing

Carlisle’s Historic Quarter Arts Festival is a celebration of contemporary work in a historic setting. The free festival runs from June 18th - 26th.

Artist Daniel Ibbotson has curated the works of over 50 local artists working in a range of media with the centrepiece of the festival set to be the exhibition 'Viola Tricola', based at Intro HQ, 7 Paternoster Row.

Other works of art are displayed at 16 venues throughout the Historic Quarter, ranging from Tullie House and Carlisle Cathedral to local bookshops and estate agents.

People are encouraged to walk around this art trail, learn more about the historic quarter and support local businesses.

In an effort to help give local businesses during the festival, organisers are urging attendees to pop into the local cafes and restaurants for refreshments as you stroll around.

Carlisle Mayor Pam Birks spoke of her delight at the upcoming launch of this event, drawing particular attention to the championing of local talents as part of the project.

"I think it's fabulous that we are taking an interest in art in our area,

"The arts have brought so many people to the city over the years. To be getting back to our roots and promoting art is absolutely fantastic- we need to do more of it.

"I'm so pleased that we're now helping young and up and coming talents. It's about encouraging these young people to achieve their dreams. Through this exposure, this can help them make the next step!

"We're taking great steps with street art and this is another step forward."

Curator Daniel Ibbotson added his excitement ahead of the launch.

He said: "We've got lots of people involved from total beginners through to experienced, internationally renowned artists.

"This is something new, there are lots of great projects in big cities but this is about finding something fresh for Carlisle."
